Bowel habits may change during pregnancy. Most women notice an increase in constipation, often accompanied by irregular bowel habits and an increased occurrence of hemorrhoids. These problems are usually the result of a slowdown in the movement of food through the gastrointestinal system and iron supplements or iron in prenatal vitamins.
Do not use laxatives to relieve constipation, other than those mentioned in the box below, without consulting your healthcare provider. If constipation is a continuing problem, discuss it with him or her.
Natural Ways to Relieve Constipation
Increase your fluid intake, and exercise three or four times a week. Many doctors suggest prune juice or a mild laxative, such as milk of magnesia. Certain foods that are high in fiber, such as bran and prunes, increase the bulk in your diet and may help relieve constipation.
