Epilepsy During Pregnancy

If you have epilepsy and have just found out you are pregnant, call your physician immediately; tell him or her you are pregnant and you have epilepsy. Most medications to control seizures can be taken during pregnancy. However, some medications are safer than others.

During pregnancy, phenobarbital is often used to control seizures. Dilantin® is occasionally recommended. It carries a higher risk of birth defects.
